My poor MAC is off for repair work at the apple store. After one external failing and now my main computer having memory issues... I am just about ready to scream. I would love to know what you guys use for your external hard drives. Any specific brands you love? Feel free to email me or comment with your suggestions. Much appreciated!!

Have a good week everyone!! :)

Seagate - I haven't had a problem yet.

Apparently WD and Maxtor are the ones to keep away from! So I hope these aren't what you have... :o(

Don't forget to always have a backup of everything you've already got, just to be on the safe side!

So I was told to try WD - studio addition. AH!

I have relied on G-DRIVE Q external drives and SuperDuper! for my rotating backups for several years.

The G-DRIVE Q drives can be a bit pricey, but you're getting a quad interface drive (USB 2.0, Firewire 400/800 and eSATA), that's whisper quiet and has some of the highest rates speeds and reliability in the industry.

The Mercury Elite-AL Pro drives from Other World Computer are every bit as good and perform nearly the same but cost significantly less.

Both drives sport all-aluminum enclosures, and interface with your Mac without any additional software or cables.

Other brands such as Seagate and Western Digital have plastic enclosures with noisy fans and use consumer-level drives.

Stick with Firewire 800 or eSATA, solid performing drives, and a rotating offsite backup schedule and you'll rest easy knowing your data is safe.

Netgear ReadyNAS Duo's with Seagate drives. These are 2 drives in a mirrored RAID so if one drive gets torched your pix are still alive on the other.

I've been using this for about 9 months as my home network backup after my last external drive failed (Western Digital). So far so good...

Hey - it's Eric Jungbauer. I use Windows Home Server, with a back up to a DLink DNS-323 NAS. It has two WD drives at RAID 1 redundancy. Basically, the Home Server backs up every computer on the network everynight, then the NAS backs up the windows home server once a week to two different drives. Everything saved on every computer on 4 different hard drives. Seagate, WD, etc. It doesn't matter.

Call me, it can be done for less than $500.
